Hi there!
It's lovely to meet you! Thank you for your interest in the Sydney Alliance Assistant Organiser's blog. We are a group of students who come from diverse cultures and backgrounds who work closely as members of the Alliance team, to engage with local communities in order to make impactful changes for Sydneysiders, through the practice of community organising.
We began as a small group of students from across Greater Sydney, who met as part of the first iteration of the Assistant Organisers program with Sydney Alliance. Since forming as the initial cohort of Assistant Organisers, we have changed to reflect people qualifying and moving on in their respective fields as social workers. However, current and future cohorts continue to build upon the contributions made to Alliance campaigns by previous alumni. We often shared interests in similar areas of research and evaluation, or asked the same questions and/or concerns - until one day we asked why wasn't there a place where we could voice these in solidarity? An online community for all Assistant Organisers to share their experiences, hopes and fears.
A suggestion to create this space turned into an amalgamation of ideas which led to the creation of the Assistant Organiser's blog. This has highlighted the passion of students involved in the space of community organising across Sydney who are seeking to use such a platform to share interests and engage in collective action. Each Assistant Organiser has taken a different route into social work, with the majority being unfamiliar with community organising and what it entails.
We want to encourage both discussion and reflection regarding social work practice and its applications in the context of community organising from a student perspective, while also giving students a safe environment in which to voice their thoughts and feelings. We aim to share blog posts, articles, videos and creative pieces in a way that engages students as an Assistant Organiser. These will be written and sourced by both the evaluation team and from Assistant Organisers across the cohort.
